An Optometrist can also be referred to as an Optician or a refractionist.
Optometry in South Africa is characterized into two main fields:
- Retail Optometry
- Privatised Optometric practice
Generally Retail Optometry practices can be found in malls and shopping centres. These practices will
commonly form part of bigger or franchised groups.
Privatised Optometric practices may also be located inside malls, but are often found outside of centres eg.
Medical centres, office parks or home-based.

Optometry in South Africa is usually a 4 year degree course offered by only certain Universities.
